New sails arrived…

windLast year we installed a new engine, now it’s time to take care of our primary source of power (wind) and that means new cruising sails from Precision SailsDSCF2012DSCF2007

This was our first time buying sails and it was quite a learning experience. These days, the majority of new mainsails are designed with a loose-foot arrangement (attached to the boom at only the clew and tack). They are easier to rig and de-rig because there are fewer attachment points and less hardware involved. Therefore, there’s almost always less friction as well, which is a bonus to those trimming the outhaul. Similarly important is the fact that a loose-footed mainsail enables you to more easily rig reefing lines by tying the bitter end around the boom.

DSCF2009The disadvantages are fairly minor. Sometimes while sailing close-hauled with the mainsail trimmed in hard and the outhaul taut, some loose-footed mainsails will produce foot flutter but this is more of an annoyance than a performance detractor.DSCF2008

It should be interesting to see how Intuition V sails under this new lose footed main sail configuration. We’ll report our findings as soon as we test them.

We (I) will have to make some adjustments to the sail pack but, it should be easy.
