Vinegar… an environmentally friendly product…and nice to have aboard

vinegarbookVinegar has been a mainstay of many recipes and uses for thousands of years. Vinegar results when wine or another alcoholic liquid is allowed to ferment a second time, turning it acetic. It may come from the juice of sweet fruits and grains, roots or wood.

It’s a trusted health remedy, neutralizer, cleaner, a condiment and a preservative. Its acetic quality enables it to kill vinegarbacteria, mold and germs and be safe enough not to harm the body or the environment.

There are multiple types and flavours vinegars available when it comes to food enhancement and vinaigrettes. It is fat free and low in sodium.

Here are the ones I found more useful to have aboard:


  1. Tenderizes meat and it’s a common ingredient in marinades.
  2. A sugar and vinegar combination (2:1) it’s the base for a sweet-sour taste.
  3. Add a tablespoon or two to the water when boiling eggs to keep them from cracking.
  4. Rub vinegar to the end cut of ham or cheese to prevent mold.
  5. Rub fish with vinegar a few minutes before scaling, to make the process easier.
  6. Whoops! You added to much salt to a recipe, add a spoonful of vinegar and sugar to try correcting the taste.


  1. Prepare a spray bottle ½ water and ½ vinegar to clean mirrors, counter tops, stoves and even floors. This will also keep crawling critters at bay.spraybottle
  2. Wipe clean vinyl upholstery with a cloth dampened in a solution of ½ vinegar and ½ water.
  3. vinegarpaintClean hardened paint brushes by soaking them in vinegar for an hour, after simmer them in a pot with vinegar. Drain and rinse clean.
  4. Deal with mold! Use full strength vinegar.


  1. Keep bright colors from bleeding during wash by soaking items in a solution 1cup vinegar and 1 gallon of water before washing.
  2. Remove perspiration odor and stains on clothing by spraying full strength vinegar on underarm and collar areas before washing them.


  1. Rinse hair after shampooing to condition, shine and fight dandruff with a solution of 1 cup vinegar and 2 cups water.
  2. Use as deodorant, spray or splash it on with your hand.
  3. Eliminate bad breath and whiten your teeth by brushing them once or twice a week with vinegar.

Home remedies…

  1. vinegardrinkRelive a sore throat by gargling a solution of a teaspoon of vinegar in a glass of warm water, then swallowing.
  2. Cut mucus with a simple mixture of equal amounts of vinegar and honey, taken by the tablespoon.
  3. To soothe cough mix ½ cup cider vinegar, ½ cup water, 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper and ¼ cup of honey. Take a tablespoon at the first sight of a cough and another at bedtime.
  4. Try to stop a feeling of nausea by sipping on a simple mixture of a couple of teaspoons of vinegar en a glass of water. Add a little honey for flavour.
  5. Soak feet in a solution of equal parts of vinegar and warm water to get rid of athlete’s foot.
  6. Clean out a cut or infection by sprinkling some baking soda on the area, pouring vinegar over and wait until the bubbles subside. Then soak the area in warm water.
  7. Stop itching from insects stings by dabbing them with a cotton ball saturated with undiluted vinegar. Also works to treat stings from jellyfish.
  8. Soothe sunburn with a towel soak in vinegar or vinegar/water mixture. Repeat as often as you like.


And just for fun…make your own hard candy…hardcandy

 2 tablespoons of butter

2 cups of sugar

½ cup of vinegar or any flavored/seasoned vinegar

Melt butter on high heat, add the sugar and vinegar.

Stir continuously.

Wash down the top side of the pan with a pastry brush dipped in cold water to keep the mixture from adhering to the sides of the pan.

Boil on high for 5 to 10 min. It will thicken and may look whitish.

Remove from the heat and pour on to oiled aluminum foil or any mold of your choice.

As it cools you may pull it as taffy with oiled fingers, or just let it cool and harden.

Store in a plastic bag.
